Hanover PA Hanover, Pennsylvania, is a York County borough about 20 miles southwest of the city of York. The community is known as the "Snack Capital of the World" thanks to the presence of numerous food producers including Utz Quality Foods, which produces Snyder's of Hanover pretzels. Approximately 15,000 people live in the community, located in a productive agricultural part of the state.

History of Hanover

The community began as the Conewego Settlement in the 1730s. For a couple of decades, disputes regarding the Maryland-Pennsylvania border led to heated property disputes. Eventually, British surveyors Jeremiah Dixon and Charles Mason were hired to survey the territory. The border they established became known as the Mason-Dixon line. In the 1760s, an early settler divided his farm into lots, and the town was formally founded. Settlers informally called it Hickory Town because of the many hickory trees in the surrounding forests.

In 1776, when Thomas Jefferson was on the way from Monticello to Philadelphia for the first meeting of the Continental Congress, he stayed at an inn on Frederick Street. Months later, on his way home, he again spent the night at the inn.

Parks and Recreation

The 3,490-acre Codorus State Park is situated just east of Hanover OnThe shores of the 1,275-acre Lake Marburg. Anglers pursue popular gamefish like muskellunge, northern pike, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. The Big Bass program requires that bass be 15-in long to be harvested, and this maintains a good supply of bigger bass in the lake.

Codorus State Park offers numerous water sports. Boaters are allowed to use up to 20 hp motors. Scuba diving is possible in Sinsheim Cove. It is possible to rent a pontoon boats, canoes, paddle boats and motorboats here. The well-appointed state park also offers one of the larger pools in all of Pennsylvania. The pool and spray ground is uniquely situated on a bluff overlooking the lake. The park also offers 19 miles of trails for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. There's a special 195-acre mountain biking area along the southern shore of the lake. The Codorus Disc Golf Course is a premier layout that hosted the state championships in 2005 and 2010.

River - Hanover PA Residents enjoy the park in the winter as well. A 500-ft sledding slope provides thrills to those with sleds and toboggans. Cross-country skiers and snowmobilers have access to over six miles of trails in the mountain biking area. Lake Marburg is popular among ice boaters, ice fishermen and ice skaters.

The two-mile-long Hanover Trolley Trail runs from Moul Field through Hanover and Penn Township. It offers hikers, runners and bikers and opportunity to exercise just minutes from home. The trolley trail is part of a network of trails maintained by the York County Rail Trail Authority formed in 1990 to develop trails for various recreational and nonmotorized purposes.

Penn Township Community Park is the home of Kids Kingdom. It also includes ballfields, sand volleyball courts and soccer fields. Young's Woods offers a playground, multiple pavilions and shaded areas for picnicking.

Golfers can tee it up at a number of excellent public layouts. South Hills Golf Club in Hanover is a gorgeous, 27-hole course featuring winding, tree-lined fairways meandering over rolling terrain. The West Course features a signature hole with an island green. Water hazards are abundant, with opportunities to get your ball wet on eight holes.

Just minutes north of Hanover is The Bridges Golf Club, a 6,713-yard, par-72 layout featuring bent grass tees, fairways and greens. Golfers enjoy views enhanced by the presence of a number of bridges, including a unique covered bridge on the second hole. The front nine meanders through wooded areas, while the back nine is more open.

Attractions and Activities

The community offers a number of shopping areas including the "Golden Mile", a stretch of Eisenhower Drive between Broadway and Carlisle Street. The miracle of the Golden mile also offers a 16-screen theater and numerous restaurants. Running parallel to the Golden Mile is the Gateway Hanover complex, completed in 2011. Finally, the North Hanover Mall provides area residents with yet another major shopping destination.

Residents attend concerts, plays and other entertainment events at the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center. The theater is located in a beautiful, century-old structure that is listed on the National Register Of Historic Places. The center is named for the man who originally constructed the building to provide for the education needs of Hanover students.

A tour of the Warehime-Myers Mansion is an enjoyable and educational indoor activity. It originally housed the family of one of the show factory founders when construction was completed in 1914. The Myers family maintained the residence until 1997. The mansion has been meticulously restored, and the tours are particularly worthwhile. During the holiday season, the Christmas tree display looks magnificent against the ornate backdrop.

Festivals and Annual Events

For more than three decades, the Hanover Dutch Festival has energized attendees in late July. Thousands of visitors browse arts and crafts displays while savoring great food and listening to live entertainment. This major south-central Pennsylvania festival pays homage to the region's Pennsylvania Dutch heritage.

In late June, the Summer Solstice Celebration raises funds for the Guthrie Memorial Library. The rooftop event features live entertainment, dancing and a live auction. The 4th of July celebration includes the Liberty Day Classic, featuring 10k and 2-mile runs beginning at Moul Field.
